The Advisory Committee on Aging (ACoA) is a council appointed committee that is mandated to gather public input and make strategic recommendations to Council regarding service delivery for seniors. The ACoA and its partner agencies have participated in a series of engagements to capture public input towards the Committee’s vision of Aging with Dignity in Wood Buffalo. With Council approval, the ACoA is working towards the requirements for designation as an Age Friendly Community under the World Health Organization.

Biography

Alberta’s Seniors’ Advocate is taking on a new role within Alberta’s system of supports and services for seniors. The Seniors’ Advocate will:

Request inspections, investigations, and quality and safety assessments related to care provided in seniors’ facilities
Refer seniors’ concerns and complaints to the appropriate place or places
Provide information and referrals to seniors, their families, and caregivers regarding government-funded seniors’ health, continuing care, and social support programs and services
Provide public education on the rights, interests and needs of seniors

Providing one-on-one mental health therapy services, by referral from physician or through the Mental Health walk-in clinic.

Mental Health crisis services operate 24/7 through the Emergency Department. An in-patient psychiatry unit includes 10 beds for patients needing immediate mental health treatment from a psychiatrist.

Assertive Outreach Services (AOS): A team from Alberta Health Services work with clients who live with a persistent mental illness. Services that are offered through the AOS program include: transportation to medical appointments, home visits, retrieval of medication, and access to a nurse for assistance with administering medications.

Biography

A confidential and anonymous service that provides crisis intervention to callers.

Information will be provided about mental health programs and services, and if needed referrals can be made to other agencies in the province.

Notes

To join the Adult Day Program, participants must be Home Care clients. You can self-refer, or a caregiver may call the referral telephone number to request an assessment for Home Care.

Cost to attend the program is $10 per day.

Provides therapeutic daytime activities to dependent seniors in the community who are 50+. Allows the caregivers and other family members to have respite during the day.

Caregivers can bring participants to the program, or there is a bus service available. The bus will typically have the participant there by 10:00 a.m. and pick up happens at approximately 3:00 p.m. To book a seat on the bus contact the SMART bus booking line at 780-743-7909. Meals and snacks are provided.

A referral can be made for participants to see an Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist or Registered Nurse.

Home Care helps people who live at home and need support with care after surgery, long-term care, palliative care, and respite services.

A case manager nurse will meet with clients to help decide what service will best support them.

The Continuing Care Access Phone Number has someone available Monday to Friday 8:15 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and Holidays 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Most services are covered but there may be charges for services that are not covered by Alberta Health Care Insurance.

A short-term counselling service to help people make changes in their lives.

The focus of counselling is to help people make changes in their lives by learning what their strengths are and using them.

Reasons for needing this support can include stress, grieving, parenting, relationships, depression and anxiety.

Confidential counselling sessions are 50 minutes.

Referrals can be made to other medical professionals as needed.

Immunizations are provided such as: Tetanus, Pneumococcal, Influenza during the flu season, and the Shingles vaccine (Shingles vaccine is provided on a pre-booking basis and there is a charge to receive this vaccine)

Provides guidance and referrals to clients who are seeking a service within the health care system that is not offered through Public Health.

Addiction treatment, prevention, and information available to those in the community having difficulty with alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and/or gambling.

Addiction counsellors are available to provide supports for those concerned with one’s own addiction or with a loved one’s substance use or gambling. Counsellors provide assessment, treatment, one on one counselling, referral to treatment facilities, groups, and educational presentations. Group Session:

Relapse Prevention Group:

All diagnostic imaging requests require a referral from your family physician or authorized healthcare practitioner.

Call 24-48 hours after the referral is made to book your appointment.

Diagnostic Imaging includes: X-Rays, ultrasounds, MRI’s, CT scans, nuclear medicine scans, mammograms, fluoroscopies, bone density tests, and some heart tests.

Provides services, programs and support to seniors to enable them to live as healthy and independently as possible. This includes presentations and resources on healthy living including benefits of active living, disease and cancer prevention, injury prevention, and tobacco and substance cessation.

Walk On Program: A free walking program, in collaboration with St. Aidan’s, Alzheimer’s Society, and MacDonald Island, for seniors on the upper level track at MacDonald Island to encourage seniors to be active and connect with others in the community. Contact Carolyn for more information.

Carpet Bowling: A free program offered for Seniors 55+ at MacDonald Island Park in the Nexen Energy Fieldhouse. No registration is required. Partnered with St. Aidan’s Society, MacDonald Island Park and Alzheimer’s Society.
